Friday Featured Author: Rue Allyn

Rue Allyn is today’s featured author!

I’m so pleased to have Rue Allyn here today as our featured author. Without further delay, let’s get to the interview…with a little twist this week.

Featured Author

Tell us about your latest release?

I have two releases this September.

On Sept. 12th, Crimson Romance is releasing the complete series of The Knight Chronicles. Readers can get the collection here https://www.amazon.com/Knight-Chronicles-Complete-Rue-Allyn-ebook/dp/B01KGNKHZ8/.

The following week, Sept. 19th my fourth medieval romance, The Herald’s Heart, debuts. This isn’t just a romance. It’s a story about identity theft in the late 13th century. I had a terrific time writing it and discovering exactly why herald’s existed and what they did. I’m sorry that I won’t have a pre-order link until Sept. 5th at the earliest. Until then keep your eye on my website http://RueAllyn.com or my Amazon page https://www.amazon.com/Rue-Allyn/e/B00AUBF3NI/.

Do you have any writing rituals? (Time of day to write, must have beverages? Etc?)

Gotta have music. Water helps.

What inspires you?

Readers who love and buy my books. The odd and interesting things I hear or learn about. The history of herald’s is an example. The topic came up in a conversation about research with another author and intrigued me so much I had to know more.

What is the biggest thing that people THINK they know about your subject/genre, that isn’t so?

Many readers want to believe that every historical romance is meticulously researched to the nth degree. So much so that except for the actual major characters everything in the book is true. If you read a book that makes you feel that way, terrific. You’ve given the author a compliment so high it could only be topped by giving a review. However, because an author has done his/her job and helped you to suspend all disbelief in the story, please do not imagine that every historical appearing detail in the book actually happened.

What do you think is the future of reading/writing?

I’m not certain what this question is asking of me. I really don’t know what might be in the future for readers and writers. I do believe that eventually costs will make paper books too expensive for mass distribution. As a reader, I kind of hope for an experience that is more interactive, somewhere between a book and a movie.

What do you like to do when you’re not writing?

Read. Spend time with my DH. Travel. Those are the top three.

What do you think makes a good story?

Great character and great conflict. Good writing helps too.

As a child, what did you want to do when you grew up?

My first ambition was to be an opera diva/coloratura soprano. I’ve always wanted to hit the high note. Sadly I have a very mezzo voice that is fading with age. Nice thing about writing, it doesn’t fade with age.

Who is your go-to author, the one you know you can always count on to deliver a great story?

I have several, but right now Susan Elizabeth Phillips is tops on my list because she almost always makes me laugh.

What projects are you working on at the present?

I’ve taken a grip on my courage and jumped whole hog into writing my first regency period romance.

What do your plans for future projects include?

I have a number of medieval romances planned, a few western romances and may even work on a couple more regencies, depending on the response to the one I’m writing now.

Tuesday Teaser: The Herald’s Heart

I’m so pleased to share Rue Allyn’s The Herald’s Heart today.

Tuesday Teaser

Royal herald Sir Talon Quereste plans to someday settle on a quiet little estate, marry well, and raise a family. The wife of his daydreams will enhance his standing with his peers – she’s certainly not an overly adventurous, impulsive, argumentative woman of dubious background who threatens everything he values, until he meets his father’s wife.

Lady Larkin Rosham lost more than everyone she loved when her family was murdered – she lost her identity. Now no one believes she’s Lady Larkin, least of all Sir Talon, whose dreams of owning Hawksedge go up in smoke if she is, indeed, his father’s lost bride.

But when the murderer strikes again, danger and betrayal lurk around every corner. Can Larkin and Talon discover how to save their lives without risking their hearts?

Rue Allyn

Author of historical and erotic romances, I fell in love with happily ever after the day I heard my first story. (Yes, I was a precocious little brat who read at the age of two, but I could hear much earlier than that.) I studied literature for far too many years before discovering that writing stories was much more fun than writing about them. Heck, as an author, I get to read the story before anyone else.

I am happily married to my sweetheart of many, many years. Insatiably curious, an avid reader and traveler I love to hear from readers about your favorite books and real life adventures. Crazy Cat stories are especially welcome. You can send me your words of wisdom . . . Don’t shake your head at me; all words are wise in one context or another. You can trust me on this; I’m an author. As I was saying, you can send your words of wisdom, humor, and friendship to me at contact@RueAllyn.com. Can’t wait to hear from you.

Friday Featured Author: JC Wardon

JC Wardon is our Featured Author

Featured Author

I’m so pleased to have another of my fellow Hotel Paranormal authors — JC Wardon — here today.

Before we get to the interview, let me share her bio.

JC Wardon

Multi-published author JC Wardon hates talking about herself, because, after all, the only important things about being an author of fiction are the stories! So here is information the Author wishes to share:

JC loves complicated plots, and world building, especially when the magical landscapes and beings (human or otherwise) are hiding and hidden right here on earth. The average person has no idea these sometimes beautiful, sometimes scary, places exist, and thinks some not-completely-human beings only fantasy… Until they step into her mystical, mythical, magical worlds, and let their minds and hearts engage.

JC is currently starting on the 12th book in the 13 book paranormal Cavanaugh Family Series, although she is really dying to get started on that final book.

Gavin’s Ghosts, book 13, will bring the entire Cavanaugh paranormal series full circle, and answers questions fans have been asking since finishing The Cavanaugh Sisters Trilogy (Mystic Thunder, Touch of Lightning, and Tempest’s Embrace), which are the first three books in the series. Many want to know just what did happen to Gavin when he left Mystic Waters as a teenager, and what will happen when he returns, widowed, twenty-five years later? Will he attempt to rekindle what was then a teenager’s first love? Or will he and his son fall victim to the horror of the town’s darkest secrets when long forgotten horrors reignite, to haunt and endanger him and his, once again?

JC’s first book of the Blood Moon Series (Blood Moon Rising) is now available and takes readers on a journey like none other. The sons of the original repentant fallen angels have only one mission, to save mankind from absolute destruction. The problem is, they need their destined mates to help enhance their powers and stave off the darkness millenniums of loneliness threatens to cause. But the mates have all but disappeared, and darkness is claiming the earth.

JC’s Mystic Waters Books are available in both ebook (digital) format, and in print.

The Interview

Tell us about your latest release?

My newest release, coming out September 14, 2016, is Soleli’s Secret. This story is the 11th of the 13 books in the paranormal Cavanaugh Family Series, and is included as one of the books of The Hotel Paranormal Collection. Soleli comes from a family of mystics whose powers are all different in some way. She alone has yet to receive what her family calls their hereditary magical gift. So, when a djinn (genie) comes into her life, and fills it with magic and mayhem, she finds her very life at risk.

Are you a plotter or pantser?

For the most part, I’m a pantser. Since the characters themselves, with their different personalities, drive the story, I find they sometimes have a better way than my original intentions for them in a story. To anyone who doesn’t write fiction, this may sound a little loony, but for me, when I’m into the story, these characters are real people whose aspirations and dreams, personalities, and distinct dialogue are as individual as any real persons.

What was the most difficult part of the publishing process for you?

I started writing way back in the days before self-publishing. When only big New York editors decided if your story, writing style, etc., was what they were looking for. It took me years to become published, which was actually a blessing. Because of the many encouraging rejection letters, where editors were kind enough to explain the reason they didn’t want my story for whichever house and line I was writing for, I had the opportunity to learn the craft of writing. When I finally got THE CALL, I knew I had earned it. If I’d started out in today’s writing world, where you can put together words and call it a book, I fear I would be putting out something of lesser value. So I’m eternally grateful for the difficulties and lessons learned along the way.

 How about the most fun?

For me, the writing is the fun part. Meeting and learning about the lives of those in the story, translating it into a story that takes readers on a journey of laughter and tears, hopes and fears, and ultimately a happy ending where love abounds. When I end a story and there are tears in my own eyes, I know I’ve done something right.

What inspired you to write your first book?

Years ago, before the thought of being a writer ever entered my mind, I was a veracious reader of novels. I loved the escape… the places an author’s words could take my already over-imaginationed mind. (Yes, I know imaginationed isn’t really a word, but I’m making it one!) After several years, I started becoming bored. I felt I was reading the same story over and over again, with different characters and settings being the only differences. The catalyst came when I was reading a novel that was, in my opinion, the flattest, most uninteresting, same old story that had been told hundreds of times, only this time worse than ever before. I decided, in that moment, I could write a better story than that. The joke was on me of course. Writing a good story is work. Hard work. And as I said in the question above, I had a lot to learn.

Do you have any writing rituals? (Time of day to write, must have beverages? Etc?)

I love to write outside in my gazebo when the weather allows, which basically means it isn’t storming. I used to write all day, every day, but life has a way of interfering with art, so lately it is writing every minute I can fit in, especially when I have a deadline.

Who is your go-to author, the one you know you can always count on to deliver a great story?

Since starting The Cavanaugh Series, I have written and published (including Soleli’s Secret and others not in this series) 15 books in the past two and a half years, and am currently working on the 12th book in The Cavanaugh Series. I’ve only had a chance to read one book in that time, authored by Maddie James. I enjoyed it very much.

What projects are you working on at the present?

I’m currently working on Heracles: Undone! Pronounced (Her.a.cleez). His book is the 12th book in The Cavanaugh Series. I had to stop writing for a couple of months on his story to fit another writing project in, and to my delight, when I read back through what I’d written already, I’m excited to move forward, full speed ahead. Heracles is the youngest triplet brother of the Cavanaugh-Whitehawk branch of the family. His older brothers include Zeus and Apollo, and like them, he must use his special hereditary gift to right wrongs, with the woman who comes into his life.

What do your plans for future projects include?

  1. Heracles: Undone! (Book 12 of The Cavanaugh Series)
  2. Gavin’s Ghosts (The 13th book and conclusion of The Cavanaugh Series)

3 & 4.  The next two books in the Blood Moon series.

After that I’m open to new projects…

What paranormal creature is featured in your book?

In Soleli’s Secret, I have a djinn (genie) named Cambyses, and Soleli, who has yet to receive her magical gift.

How does your main character feel about his/her trip to the HP?

Cambyses has been there before and knows the ropes. Soleli is at first surprised by the magical hotel, and all the things happening within, then hopes it will support her quest.

What was your favorite part about writing in this group project?

I so appreciate being asked to contribute my newest release to this collection of paranormal books. Setting part of my story within the walls of this unique hotel, and having the hotel being a personality which aides my heroine at times, was definitely fun. I look forward to reading all the books in the upcoming collection, which will be individually released by each author, beginning mid-August 2016 thru the beginning of March. My book is up for preorder now at https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01I128BT0/ and will release September 14th.

Tuesday Teaser: Soleli’s Secret by JC Wardon

Tuesday Teaser

I’m so pleased to share Soleli’s Secret, from my fellow Hotel Paranormal author JC Wardon as today’s Tuesday teaser.

Soleli’s Secret

Will exposing her deepest desire set her free, or imprison her forevermore?

***

Hard work and never coloring outside of the lines, certainly set Soleli Cavanaugh-Hansen up for professional success. She is proud to be Dr. Hansen, even though her days consist of little more than work, sleep, and more work. Of course, she isn’t jealous she alone never received a hereditary mystical gift, like all the other members of her very large magical family. She would deny to her dying breath that she envies those who’ve found deep and abiding love with a partner, as her sisters and cousins have…. But something is missing, leaving her life less than fulfilled. She just wishes she knew what to do to fix it!

When a gorgeous genie suddenly pops into her life, saying he will grant her heart’s deepest desire, Soleli’s excitement skyrockets. She is certain now her humdrum life will take a sharp turn for the better, and the fascinating Hotel with magic of its own, is just the beginning. Only, the closer she and her Djinn become, the more she fears he may have an underhanded agenda all his own….

“May I transport you to our room?”

Soleli nodded. She didn’t have enough strength to walk down the massive staircase, cross the large lobby, and wait for the elevator to take them to their floor. She needed to lie down. Let her mind clear. And then pull it together enough to form words of apology to give Cambyses without completely humiliating herself.

Her back and bottom met the soft mattress before she realized he’d lifted her. Cambyses slowly pulled his arms away, his look one of both concern and regret. The first she understood, the second, she didn’t know what to think.

Curling away from him and hiding her face was tempting, but she’d displayed enough cowardly behavior since meeting him. She stayed still and looked up at him instead. “I’m sorry about that. I honestly don’t know what came over me.”

Cambyses features relaxed. “You and I had a moment.” His massive chest rose and fell. “You didn’t like it.”

Soleli sucked in her bottom lip, realized his focus went there, and released it. “I didn’t, not like it. It was inappropriate.”

“I don’t understand.”

Feeling vulnerable, lying as she was, Soleli sat up and scooted up to rest her back on the headboard. She opened her hand and waved it, hoping he would sit. She felt too tiny with him standing so close. Being tall for a woman, it wasn’t a comfortable feeling.

Once he took the offered seat, Soleli pressed her lips together, hoping she could form the thoughts and words that would neither encourage nor insult.

“It means it’s something I shouldn’t have done, under the circumstances.”

“I know the meaning of the word. Even trapped in the lamp I can hear and see what goes on in the outside world. I’ve learned much over the years. What I don’t understand is why you feel it inappropriate to desire me.”

So I don’t have to spell it out. That was something.

“You say you are to serve me until after you grant whatever I say is my deepest desire. That makes me responsible for you. It makes me your….”

“Mistress,” Cambyses supplied.

“Yes. And you, my….”

Cambyses grinned. “Slave.”

Soleli cleared her throat. “Yes.”

He nodded. “You would not be the first woman, Mistress, to use me for your pleasure.”

Soleli stared at him, determined to ignore how livid that made her. “That isn’t fair to you.”

He grinned. “I didn’t mind, mostly.”

“It still isn’t fair. You had no choice.”

For the first time he looked away, down at the space on the mattress between them. When he looked up, he nodded. “You are right. But you must understand that it is my lot in life. I try not to think about how unfair it all has been. I would be too angry to live with myself. And since I cannot bring myself to end my own life, I do not want to live with such anger.”

Her heart broke for him, but doubted he’d appreciate or want her pity. “You can die?”

Cambyses nodded. “Not easily, but yes.”

“That would be a travesty.”

His head tilted as he studied her. “Why do you care?”

Soleli hesitated, not sure how to express her feelings. Were they typical, since she valued life in general? It didn’t feel that way. It felt much more personal, but for that, she had no explanation. “You are a living, breathing, being. And you were once human. I am a doctor, and value life.”

Though he tried to hide it, Soleli felt his disappointment with her answer. “And I like you.”

His smile flashed, and the air in the room felt much lighter.

“You like me.”

She hadn’t meant to chuckle, but she did. “I do.”

“I like you too.”

The silence that followed was awkward again. She searched for something more to say, but couldn’t come up with a thing.

“I have never done this with a master or mistress before, but I’d like to tell you who I really am. Who I was before I was cursed with the life of a djinn.”

Lynda Haviland, writer of paranormal romance, is easily bribed with hazelnut coffee, chocolate with caramel, or a bottle of Pinot Noir. She can also be talked into getting lazy on the couch and binge-watching a season of Buffy. Unveiled is the third story in the Hidden Coast Romance series featuring the ghostly matchmaker, Nellie Pearle. But Nellie Pearle is a busy spirit and she loves a challenge. So look for her and other oddly entertaining residents of Pearl Key coming soon.

The  Interview

Are you a plotter or pantser?

I am definitely a plotter with occasional pantser tendencies. After my research phase, I can’t write the first word of the story until I know who the story is about and where it’s going. That said—my characters have minds of their own too. So it’s not unusual for a story to take a weird turn that I didn’t see coming. I LOVE it when that happens.

What was the most difficult part of the publishing process for you?
The most difficult part of the publishing process for me is to STOP EDITING! Part of the problem is all my fault. I’m a Certified Procrastinator. My most creative brain cells wake up at the last minute. I definitely drive my editors and formatters nuts!

How about the most fun?

Oddly enough, editing is the most fun for me. 😉

Do you have any writing rituals? (Time of day to write, must have beverages? Etc?)

Writing rituals, oh yes. Before I start writing a new project, I need a weekend TV binge of something I love to kick off my muse. Sometimes it’s the Lord of the Rings trilogy. Sometimes it’s a whole season of Buffy, The Vampire Slayer. My latest movie addiction is Perks of Being a Wallflower. I just love Charlie. He triggers the Tiger Momma inside me—just wanna hold him and protect him from the mean world.

What projects are you working on at the present?

Currently, I’m working on a spin-off from Pearl Key, a paranormal suspense novella series called Freaktown. Pearl Key is in a very secluded part of Florida called the Hidden Coast, and in the early 1900s, this area became a perfect haven for sideshow and circus folk—and anyone else seeking sanctuary and solitude. Take nothing in Freaktown for granted, especially the residents.

What paranormal creature is featured in your book?

My Hidden Coast Romance Series features a very colorful matchmaker, Nellie Pearle. She’s not your typical “fairy godmother” type—she’s a heavy-set, tattooed, feathered-boa addicted ghost of a sideshow entertainer from the late 1800’s. When the opportunity came along to write a story for The Hotel Paranormal Series, I knew Nellie would love a little R&R time at The Hotel. But getting there wouldn’t be easy. This would be her biggest challenge yet, because the stakes are higher for her than they’ve ever been before.

How does your main character feel about his trip to the Hotel Paranormal?

There couldn’t have been a better place in the universe for Eva Ward to escape to—or a place that has more rules than she does. The unique magic of The Hotel Paranormal gives the ghosts of my story a safe place to be corporeal for a while. I LOVED the opportunity of giving Nellie Pearle her full weight and form again. And she doesn’t waste a single sensory moment.

What was your favorite part about writing in this group project?

My favorite part about this group project would have to be the challenge of writing with a significant portion of the setting designed by someone else. I’m somewhat of a control freak, so being constrained by someone else’s vision is a hard way to write. I’ve never been within a series set up like this before, but I loved the concept. I loved the idea that multiple people could write independent stories set within the same space, and have their characters interact with core employees of The Hotel in different ways. I find this a very realistic vision. Think of how often we walk into our favorite restaurant or coffee shop—like tons of our neighbors do. And none of us experience that shop with the same set of sensory details. We hear different sounds. We smell different fragrances. And we respond to the people around us differently too. My second favorite part about this group project will be reading every book in the series. 

Thank you very much for this opportunity! I hope you like Unveiled. Eva is the broken-and-in-denial character I’ve been waiting to write about. She’s like Charlie (of Perks of Being a Wallflower) to me. I just want to go back in time to little Eva and hold her tight.

Excerpt

The teaser I’d like to share with you today is a section of my favorite scene from early in the story involving Ms. Nellie Pearle—the ghostly matchmaker who is so good at what she does that she keeps me really busy as a writer. In this scene, Eva has reached Nellie’s tomb and summoned the old ghost for a feisty interrogation.

“Where are the veils?” Eva lowered the bone, but withdrew it when Nellie cried out in pain. There was a look of fear in Nellie’s vague eyes. Eva was the source of that fear, and she hated how that felt. Something like shame bloomed in her chest. But she needed to get to the veils first.

Nothing else matters.

Eva set aside the lighter and resumed her efforts to fill the bag with Nellie’s bones.

“Young lady, you are a thief.”

“I’m a curator, an acquisition specialist.” Eva continued to move the bones to their new resting place. “And don’t judge me. You were once a very successful fortune-teller. You conned many people out of their money with your crystal ball. What’d you call it? Eye of the Gods?”

“Pearl of the Gods, and don’t sass me. I paid my price. Will you be ready to pay yours, Evangeline?”

Eva didn’t like the way Nellie was looking at her with a mixture of doubt and pity. And how in the hell did Nellie know her name? The bag couldn’t fill up fast enough. In her haste, fistfuls of feathers now joined the bones in the duffle bag.

Finally, Eva stood with the duffle in one hand and the lighter in the other. “Nellie Pearle, I need to know where the veils are and only you can tell me that. This can happen one of two ways. You’ll refuse to tell me and I’ll set this whole bag on fire. I’m sure these old bones will go up in smoke very quickly, and you’ll finally be free of this mortal world. Or—you agree to tell me where they are and I’ll hide your bones in a more secure location.”

“So nobody else can ever threaten me the way you have?”

Eva admired Nellie Pearle’s stubborn resolve, but they didn’t have time to get matching friendship tattoos. Eva ruthlessly channeled the wave of guilt away from her heart. “Precisely.”

Laughter bounced around the stone mausoleum. Deep belly laughter. A flame-orange phantom boa slid from the shadows and wrapped around Nellie’s shoulders. She rubbed it across her cheek as if caressing its softness. Then, she was all business.

“Honey, you got guts. I hope you can swim.”

She misses her brother and dreams of her high school sweetheart, but a woman can’t have everything. And what good was she to the ranch? She couldn’t even sit a horse. It would take a lot to get her home again. Like a terminally ill brother who has only days or weeks to live.

But his current job as foreman for a large ranch in Oklahoma has ended suddenly and Baxter McAfee’s job offer comes at a great time. What could be better than working for his old buddy on the prettiest ranch, with the best reputation? And with Maggie never coming home, his heart is safe.

Featured Author

Please welcome Christine Alvarez here today! She is our Featured Author. Before I get to the Interview, let me share her bio with you.

Bio

I am Christine Alvarez, mother of four spectacular hoodlums and married to the man of my dreams. We all currently reside in my home state of Missouri. When I am not writing I spend my spare time as a chauffeur, maid, cook, and everything in between.

Christine Alvarez
I am addicted to Dr. Pepper and chocolate. They are my vices and lend a large hand in getting the creative juices flowing. I write anything from paranormal romance to erotica. I am a sucker for romance whether it is the kind with a happily ever after or burned and broken end. You will find my work covers those gray areas in between as well.
You can learn more about my work at Facebook and my website.

The Interview

Tell us about your latest release?

My latest release is an extended release of a novella that was originally released as part of an anthology.

Sealed in Blood is a paranormal romance where Kyon, the hellhound, is given a contract to retrieve the soul of Claire, a Nephilim, who wasn’t the one to make the deal to begin with.

When things go wrong all hell is out to get them both.

Are you a plotter or pantser?

I am a pantser all the way. I try and plot and that never goes well.

A perfect example is the Beyond Blood series. Plotted as an Urban Fantasy which ended up transforming into a Paranormal Erotic Horror.

What was the most difficult part of the publishing process for you?

Editing

At times I feel like I’m doing an entire rewrite. I also struggle with “What the hell is that supposed to mean” syndrome. That generally happens after a  late night cram session.

How about the most fun?

Hitting Publish.

It’s a huge high-inducing moment.

What inspired you to write your first book?

I hadn’t written in years. A growing family had put it on the backburner, but when my oldest daughter won a Young Author award in 4th grade it all changed. We went to the conference where two authors were speaking and one told me you weren’t ever too old to write.

So, long story short I went home that day and opened a word doc and started to write. I had no expectations, but it felt amazing and the words poured from my fingers to the keys.

Do you have any writing rituals? (Time of day to write, must have beverages? Etc?)

Having 4 kids 11 and under my only ritual is finding time and peace and quiet. I do tend to eat a load of junk food. I tried carrots once and the story fell flat. My muse needs her sweets, lol.

Who is your go-to author, the one you know you can always count on to deliver a great story?

I have a few on my long list. Lately, my mood has been on the darker side of the spectrum so I’ve been reading Ella Dominguez religiously.

What projects are you working on at the present?

Currently, I am working on the final installment in my very first book and series. I have my sights set on Deveno releasing at the end of this month.

What do your plans for future projects include?

Though, I started out writing paranormal romance my muse has dove head-first into the darker waves of the ocean. Most, if not all, of my currently In progress works dip into those darker waters.

I’ll be finishing up the Beyond Blood series as well as starting a few dark standalones.

I also have a few shorts in some amazing upcoming anthologies.

Sealed in Blood, The Hellbound Chronicles, VOL. 1

13403784_1423085167708174_8834639861004020065_oAn agreement sealed in blood, forged by the blind love of a mother for her daughter, but was it the right choice?

Claire, a being created from the union of man and angel, has been hidden in plain sight, her lineage kept a secret from everyone – including herself. Kyon, a Hellhound, has been sent to collect her soul, but one look and those plans have changed.

What happens when fate intervenes? When you fall for the soul you were meant to take? Or for the being that was meant to kill you?

All Hell breaks loose and you take on the demon’s wrath.
